4th of July Inspired Outfits

The 4th of July is right around the corner and I am so excited for all the Red, White & Blue I can handle! I have already started pulling all the red, white and blue I can find from mine and Atlas's closet so we have a weeks worth of festive outfits to wear for the big summer holiday. When I was a child 4th of July was 'the' holiday for my family. My grandparents would throw a huge bash at their farmhouse for the entire neighborhood and it was easily the most memorable night of the summer. My grandpa would spend hours making homemade ice cream, and my grandma would cook and cook for days prior to the big event! The kids would catch frogs the week of the forth and save them for the traditional frog races my grandmother would hold for us every year. I wish I could find pictures of us holding the frog races, so much fun and I'm sure hilarious for anyone not from our family to see! I have so many memories of July 4th on the farm and it makes me miss that old farmhouse and my grandparents terribly.

My parents are holding a 4th of July party this year, and you can bet I'll be wearing red, white and blue all week long. I've pulled together some 4th of July Inspired Outfits from my closet and I hope this post brings you inspiration for the week ahead. Mostly everything I am wearing in this post is old, except for these new red shoes from Lulus's which I love as a summer staple. You can also find me wearing them here in my Memorial Day post. I think they may almost be sold out, but I also love these which are almost identical.

Here are five 4th of July Inspired outfits I pulled together from my closet, and my recommendations on where you can find similar pieces. I wasn't able to get Atlas in all of my photos, mostly because he is three and can only handle a couple pictures at a time. Plus changing him into that many outfits for one photo-op is a nightmare friends, but he is always such a good sport to help his mama out!

1. Blue Striped Dress w/ Converse

I love this look because it is so comfy and simple. I found this blue striped dress for a steal at $19.00 at a boutique during my trip to Palm Springs with my sister, you can find my blog post about our trip here. I paired this dress with my converse and a Ralph Lauren ball cap for a sporty look. For a touch of red you could wear pair a striped dress with a red cardigan, which I tied around my waist because it was terribly humid during our photo shoot. Even in the Texas heat, I often always keep a sweater with me because I get chilly as soon as I step indoors.

2. Light Blue Stripes

I have been wearing this combo all summer long, an off the shoulder top with crisp white shorts! My mother in-law got me these white shorts from T.J. Maxx, but I found a similar pair from Ralph Lauren as linked below. My white espadrille wedges are from Lulu's and are such a great price at only $23.00. If your looking for the perfect pair of espadrilles I definitely recommend them. Atlas's outfit is from Carters also from my mother-in law which I couldn't find online, but I linked a similar top and some classic navy shorts perfect for July 4th. My mother in law also just got him a pair of classic boat shoes from Target, but I linked a similar pair from Carters!

3. Red Romper & Navy with Stripes

I found this plaid red romper at Old Navy during the beginning of summer, but it is currently sold out unfortunately. I linked a gingham red romper from Ralph Lauren that is adorable, and Francesca's also has so many cute options. I picked my top three favorite options that would all work perfectly for July 4th below! Atlas is wearing a classic navy polo and seersucker shorts with his boat shoes! I love a classic American style for little boys and you will often find Atlas in classic outfits similar to this one. Ralph Lauren is his go to clothing brand and they are currently having their summer sale through 6/27. Take an Extra 25% Off Select Styles for Up To 60% Off with Code SUM25. 4. Denim on Denim with Red Shoes

This is my go-to look for when I don't feel like getting dressed in the morning. I often wear this outfit to work because it is so simple you can't mess it up. I found these red shoes at Lulu's at the beginning of summer for such a great price and they are perfect for July 4th. I believe Lulu's is almost sold out of these red beauties, but I found a very similar pair below.

Chambray Top- $68.00

High Rise Levi's- $40.00

Madden Girl Red Sandles- $49.00

5. Sailor Shorts & A Red Checkered Shirt

I am in love with sailor shorts, and I found these at the same boutique in Palm Springs which I fell in love with. They are the perfect shade of navy blue and I can wear them with so many different tops. For a casual look I went with a simple white striped top and my red shoes. Classic and comfy for this Texas humidity we are having lately. Both Atlas and I are wearing sunnies from FJ Popshop, we love their styles and they have so many at a great price. I tend not to spend that much on sunglasses because when I do I either lose them or break them. I have been impressed with the quality of sunglasses at FJ Popshop and they have become a go to shop for me when I'm in need of a new pair! I have been wearing the heart sunnies quite often because I love the playful look they give for summer. I chose a classic aviator style for Atlas because they go great with his wardrobe.  Atlas is wearing his classic chambray shorts and a red checkered button up which I love for the 4th of July. Such a great staple item for all summer long, but particularly perfect for this holiday!

This was a fun photo-shoot with Atlas, he gets so animated in front of the camera and has a good time with it. I hope this post brings you some inspiration for planning the perfect 4th of July outfit this coming weekend. Which look was your favorite? I would love to hear from you in the comments section below.

Love,

Nichole Rae

A 4th of July Toddler Craft Project

4th of July Toddler Craft Project

The 4th of July is right around the corner and I hope you have plans for sparklers, watermelon, and a long holiday weekend with your loved ones! If you are staying local like us this weekend, spend an afternoon creating these 4th of July mini star banners with your little titan for something sweet to send in the mail to grandma and grandpa! Or use it as an excuse to get out the paint and glitter and make a big mess with your little ones.

For this craft project you'll need the following:
Red & blue craft paint
Various sizes of star stamps or (DIY out of a sponge like we did)
White craft paper
Scissors and a medium star template or a medium star punch
Red or blue decorative trim or ribbon
Glitter of your choosing
Washi tape
And party poppers for some extra fun- You can get at any fireworks stand or a pack of 6 at the dollar tree.

Set up an art station for your toddler outside with sunscreen and bug spray in tote, and have a blast making a glittery red, white and blue mess! Watch out for paint to mouth action, and make sure you both wear something you don't mind getting paint all over! We keep his little white t-shirt handy for craft projects! Spend some time teaching colors and shapes and enjoy this sweet moment together!

Once you are both finished painting, the fun part begins! Clean up! Ha-ha just kidding, but yes you will have a lot of clean up before you start the process of putting together the mini-banner.

Directions for mini star banner:

1.  For the quick and easy route you can cut out your stars with a star punch from hobby lobby or Michael's! Or if you are like me and don't have much art supplies, simply trace your stars from either a cookie cutter or toddler block onto the paper and cut out with scissors.

2. Once you have all of your stars cut out determine how many stars you want on your banner. We chose 5 star's to fit Atlas's name, but you could do anything you want like 'U.S.A.' 'July 4th', '2015', etc. Or you could even leave the banner blank, your choice!

3. Use washi tape to attach your decorative trim or string to the back of the star.

4. Cut your trim to the size length you prefer and you are finished!

5. Next tie a tag to the end of the trim with a note telling your recipient how they can use their banner! We suggest they be used as window decor, hanging on the fridge, or as a sweet 4th of July cake banner!

6. Package your banner in an simple envelop and stuff with party popper confetti for a little something extra!

Happy 4th of July and have fun creating a messy adventure with your little Titan! Tell us about your favorite July 4th craft projects in our comments section below, we would love to hear from you. By the way I think my little titan just ate a pint of blueberries while I was finishing this blog post!

Until our next adventure,

Nichole Rae

P.S. for the grandparents out there who may read this post, yes your Atlas '4th of July' banners are headed your way!

5 Things To Do with Your Dad on Father's Day

In honor of Father's Day approaching this coming weekend I wanted to share some ideas on fun things to do with your dad or husband on Father's Day.  I love spending time with my Dad and I'm excited for the upcoming weekend to get out and do something special with him. I'm also excited to celebrate my husband being a new dad for three years now.  He deserves a special day dedicated to being a great Dad....because he is just that, an amazing dad! My husband currently works full time, attends school full time and is a full time dad and husband. I honestly don't know how he does it and I am so proud of him for sticking it through and giving quality time to me and Atlas when he can. We love you Daddy and thanks for being so great to us.

I worked with my husband to come up with this list of 5 things to do with your dad on father's day, and I hope it becomes of use to you when trying to plan something fun with your dad or husband this weekend.

1. Take him to a local brewery- My dad and my husband love visiting family friendly craft breweries. It has become a hobby of theirs and something the entire family can do together, as most craft breweries allow children 21 and under as long as they are accompanied by an adult.  We enjoy visiting brewery's not only for the craft beer, but for the friendly atmosphere, the science of making a craft beer, and just to hang out in a cool place with family and friends. You can try the beer if you want to, but it's not a requirement if you aren't one who prefer's it. You can find a local brewery near you on the Find A U.S. Brewery Website

2. Take him fishing- Atlas and I plan to take my husband fishing this father's day. My husband used to fish with his dad as a kid and it is a fun past time for him that we want to participate in. Don't forget to order your fishing license if your state requires it. If you live in Texas you can get a fishing license here

3. Take him to see a movie- This one is a duh, I mean what dad doesn't like a giant bowl of popcorn and a huge screen TV with a new thrilling movie to watch. Better yet take him to a drive in, some of our favorite drive-ins here in Texas are The Showboat Drive-In Tomball, TX , Coyote Drive-In Ft. Worth, TX and The Galaxy Drive-In in Ennis, TX. We are planning to take Atlas to see Finding Dory this weekend and if your Dad or husband hasn't already seen it, Warcraft is a good guy movie. However, I personally wouldn't take kids to this one as it can be scary at times.

4. Host a barbecue- Hamburgers, Hot-Dogs, Chips, Watermelon and your dad are the only ingredients it takes for a great Father's Day. Fix up your backyard and host a simple barbecue for your dad this father's day. Better yet visit a local lake and host a barbecue there. If you are in North Houston, visit Lake Conroe Park which has public access to the lake and barbecue pit access.

5. Take him to a baseball game- We love visiting the Astro's stadium and haven't been in a while but I know this is a favorite activity of my husband's. Surprise your dad with ticket's and schedule a baseball game day with your Dad this father's day. If you are an Astro's fan you can check out the schedule here

For the second half of this blog post I wanted to share about our recent visit to Spindletap Brewery in Houston, TX. Just about my entire family visited this brewery last weekend and it was one of our favorites so far in Houston. Spindletap Brewery has a great selection of craft beers and an amazing atmosphere if you are looking for somewhere neat to hang out on Sunday with your dad. You must try their fresh soft pretzels and go prepared to play a couple games of giant Jenga and cornhole board.  I love brewery's that incorporate a family experience, and Spindletap does a great job of this. There were many kids Atlas's age and we felt comfortable as a family there. You can normally catch a live band on weekends at Spindletap, but if you are looking for a quieter spot sit in the warehouse space and see where the beer is actually made. It's a special treat that we really enjoyed! Spindletap Brewery's building is absolutely beautiful, and they have filled it with craftsman pieces including beautiful picnic tables and displays. It is truly a creative space and I see many more visits in the future.

I hope you have a wonderful Father's Day this coming weekend, and I hope this post helped you think of some fun ideas to do with your dad and husbands to celebrate! What is your favorite thing to do with you dad? I would love to hear from you in our comments section below.

With Love,

Texas Travel- The Moody Gardens Rainforest Pyramid in Galveston, TX

Texas Travel- The Moody Gardens Rainforest Pyramid in Galveston, TX

We most recently had the chance to visit The Moody Gardens Rainforest Pyramid during our end of summer family vacation and I am glad we added it to our schedule. Moody Garden's is a large tourist attraction for those in the Houston Metroplex, but since we visited during the off season we just about had the entire Rainforest pyramid to ourselves. I absolutely love when this happens because it just makes the experience that much sweeter.

Texas Travel- Lake Conroe Marina

One of our favorite hang out spots during the Spring season is definitely the Lake Conroe Marina. You can find us here on a beautiful afternoon feeding the fish and grabbing some fajita's at one of our favorite restaurants, Fajita Jacks. If you get the chance to visit Fajita Jacks, ask to sit outside on the patio which has a beautiful view of the lake. The little titan always looks forward to visiting the Marina, because it means boats, ducks and his favorite thing of all...water! We definitely have to keep an eye on him because I think with his spirit he would just jump right in. We are planning on taking swimming lessons this summer, which I am really excited about...but even then a requirement of visiting the Marina is keeping mommy's hand company!

We have had a lot of rain here in north Houston lately, but there was one evening last week where I was able to pull out my off-the-shoulder striped top and white sandals from Lulu's. I was a little hesitant about purchasing this top because I was afraid it would be too revealing in the mid section, but the stripe pattern and pretty blue color drew me in and I decided to try it. Once I put it on with my high waist white jeans from Old Navy I absolutely loved it! This top is perfect for the lake or beach, and is a must for a sexy date night look this Spring or Summer. My husband is definitely a fan of the off-the-shoulder trend, and despite my modest style I like to wear something he thinks is sexy every now and then! This top does the trick and is not too revealing if you wear high-rise jeans or a skirt.

If you have been following my Instagram feed lately, you will probably notice that I have been a big fan of these white flat sandals from Lulu's this Spring. I don't think I've taken them off since they arrived at our doorstep.  They are classic white sandals with a beautiful cut-out design. The quality of the sandal is decent, but at my rate I do not foresee them lasting much longer than a single season. If you are looking for a budget friendly white sandal I would definitely recommend these, they are comfy and perfect to wear with denim, dresses or skirts. I also love these white huarache flats which are currently on my wish list!

I love nothing more than spending an evening with my husband and little titan! We get so busy and it was really nice to sit back on the patio at Fajita Jacks with a margarita, a nice breeze and my two boys! We want to spend some more time on the lake this summer, and might try a canoe ride or paddle boarding. One day I can see us becoming a lake family and maybe purchasing a boat for summer's on the lake. For now, beautiful evenings at the marina make me just as happy! If you are looking for something fun to do with your little one's this weekend plan a trip to Lake Conroe to feed the fish and see the boats at the Marina. It is inexpensive and a great way to make family memories this Spring. Bring some quarters for the fish food, we ran out quickly!  I hope you have a great weekend and I am sharing some of my favorite off-the-shoulder tops and dresses from Lulu's that are a must have this season! Let us know which one is your favorite it the comments section, we would love to hear from you.
